Shirley Johnson served more than two decades as an executive assistant to BYU Coach LaVell Edwards. She's graciously agreed to share some of her memories of LaVell and the golden era of BYU football with us. Shirley has a treasure trove of anecdotal stories and funny moments during LaVell's career and we're honored that she has agreed to allow them to be chronicled here.

The Many Sides of LaVell

Everyone who knew LaVell recognized that he had both a great sense of humor and a deep love for people. His sideline demeanor usually included a frown but that was only, as he joked, because he had forgotten to tell his face to smile.

The Miracle Bowl

I started at the football office in April of 1980. That fall we were having a good season and were invited to play in the Holiday Bowl for the third consecutive time.

A Momentous Beginning

When his assistant retired, he asked me to come down and work for him. I was thrilled because I was already an avid fan of both LaVell and the football program.
